Handyman from IVALO

“In the 1960s, work brought my parents from Ostrobothnia on the west coast to Ivalo for 25 years. My mother was a teacher, and my father had a driving school, which my sister now runs. I left Ivalo for upper secondary school in Kauhava, then military service in Sodankylä and finally Vaasa Polytechnic. I’ve now been with VEO for nearly 20 years.

I was very active even as a child – always there when something happened. Ice hockey was a big thing for me, a passion, when I was young. At the age of 14, I was playing in the men’s league. To succeed, I learned to outthink my opponents and play hard. I faced challenges head-on, at full speed.

Speaking of full speed, motor sport is another passion of mine. I competed in banger racing with a legendary Saab 96 and rode shotgun in rallies with a Toyota Starlet. In our best rally season, we placed fifth in the junior series. Not bad, considering we made it to the finishing line only three times! It was make it or break it – literally. I’m still just as competitive in sport and at work. Cars continue to be my hobby, but in a different form. Now I restore classic cars. I have five of them, and I work on them whenever I can find the time.

Other things take up my time as well, such as when I built our own house. I built it from scratch: I even cut down the trees myself. I so to say “fetched the splinters”. Building the house took 1,500 hours over 18 months, alongside work, which included 100 days of travel. My wife and I have three children, so I was pretty busy. However, it was all worth it. I’m proud of what I achieved.

I’ve always worked hard. It all began with a summer job, as often happens. After I graduated, I worked at a small power plant and transferred to VEO nearly 20 years ago. To begin with, I was a Project Engineer, and I’ve had a variety of jobs before landing my current one. It has been a long, rewarding journey. I have achieved all of my successes through hard work. And the journey continues: our goal is to make VEO the preferred partner in project deliveries in the Nordic countries by 2020.

I see a lot of myself in VEO: a certain passion and curiosity, along with a strive for awareness of quality. I’m proud of all of the projects we have completed. Consistent quality at work – and in life in general – comes from a genuine enthusiasm to continuously improve. That is the secret of our success.”
