When life has given a lot, you want to give something back
Janne Tuomivirta is a man of principle. He takes care of those around him and enjoys sharing his knowledge at work and on his freetime.
Janne is the shop steward of his work community at VEO. Read about Janne’s noble-minded and uncompromisingly honest attitude towards life.
”I’m from Vaasa, born and bred here. My family consists of four people. I have a wife and twins, a girl and a boy. We live in Mustasaari. I’ve been doing sports my whole life. First it was hockey, now it’s floorball.
I started doing sports when I met my neighbours, two brothers. My father was the equipment manager of their hockey team. We would play street hockey every other day. At some point our parents took us to the Brändö ice rink, and that was the starting point of my zest for ice hockey.
I played hockey more or less seriously in Vaasan Sport for 25 years. I’ve been involved in floorball for 13 years now, first as a player and now for the fifth year as a junior coach in the SB Vaasa B06 team.
Sports play a very important role in my life. Family comes first, then sports. VEO comes third. That’s the way it should be, I think. Sports is a good counterbalance to everything else in life. It is pure passion. I’ve always wanted to give it my all, as a player and a coach.
”There’s nothing better than seeing your kids develop as players and as human beings.”
When I was a player, my coaches gave me a lot. Now I want to give something back to the juniors. There’s nothing better than seeing your kids develop as players and as human beings. It’s the best reward a coach can get.
Team sports and my job at VEO have some similar features. Both entail a lot of communication between people. You have to know the strengths and weaknesses of people and be able to pull the right strings. Everyone has their unique role in a sports team and at work. If you don’t play your position well, it will come back to bite you.
”It’s great to wear ugly clothes and wade waist-deep in the river.”
Fishing is another great passion of mine, especially river fishing. When you’re alone with your thoughts, standing on the river bank, your mind is completely blank in a good way. It’s an escape for me. It’s great to wear ugly clothes and wade waist-deep in the river.
I’ve been working here at VEO for four years now. I’ make medium voltage switchgears for our clients. I had worked so long for my previous employer that I needed a change. I wanted more demanding work. I needed to challenge myself again.
”I’m the bigmouth who is not afraid to go and tell the company management what everyone is thinking.”
I think the social skills that are highly important in team sports are also appreciated here at VEO, since I was elected shop steward. I wasn’t hankering for it at all, but I guess it’s the same thing as when your best mate asks you to be his best man: you don’t say no. I am the link between the management and the production personnel. I’m the big mouth who is not afraid to go and tell the company management what everyone is thinking.
VEO is a big firm, but not big enough to be considered a large company. People are working hard here. VEO has a good reputation: we have a laid-back but hard-working ambience. We do things well but we are not nit-pickers. All success is rooted in the inner motivation of the people.
I can honestly say that if you order something from VEO, you can be sure you get it.”
